Fans had long given up on the first film’s promised sequel, ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money‘ – but now we’re off, and Mel Brooks himself announced it 🫨
Honestly, I’d forgotten Brooks is still alive. He’ll be 99 in a couple of weeks!
TLDR
Spaceballs 2 is officially coming in 2027, with Josh Gad starring, co-writing, and producing.
Mel Brooks is back, and original stars Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are reportedly returning.
Pullman’s real-life son might even join the cast as the next-gen Lone Starr.
Decades after Brooks first gave Star Wars a loving slap across the face with Spaceballs, the galaxy’s most ridiculous rebels are gearing up for another round of interstellar stupidity – right in time for the original’s 40th anniversary.
Josh Gad (the snowman from Frozen and the loud bloke from The Book of Mormon) will star, and he’s also co-writing and producing.
Gad will team up with screenwriting duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, whose credits include Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. (Despite what their names might suggest, dad, those are both great flicks!)
The trio are joining forces with director Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper) for what’s being lovingly described as a “Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Basically, it’s Spaceballs, but with some new bells and whistles – and hopefully a bigger budget for hairdryers.
Hopefully we’ll get Brooks’ influence in there too, but there’s been no mention of his piece beyond reprising the Yoda-satirising role of Yogurt.

Plot details are still under wraps, but whispers suggest it won’t just be a lazy nostalgia Search for More Money.
According to Deadline, original cast members Bill Pullman (Lone Starr) and the long-retired Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet) will return – which would be huge, especially considering Moranis has barely been seen on screen since the ’90s. (His only recent Dark Helmet gig was a voice cameo on The Goldbergs.)
Also possibly joining the cast: Lewis Pullman – Bill Pullman’s real-life son and a star of Top Gun: Maverick and, Thunderbolts – is rumoured to be playing Lone Starr and Princess Vespa’s kid. Honestly, that’s perfect, and it could mean we’ll see Daphne Zuniga back too.
There’s no release date yet, but it’s set for 2027 and we should be getting teasers soon. Here’s hoping Brooks lives to see it on the big screen!
In the meantime, you can rent or buy the original 1987 film Spaceballs on Prime Video – probably a good idea to refresh your memory before this new ride through ludicrous speed kicks off.
