Bound to Japan’s Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan? It’s an epic adventure, take it from me.
Of course, if you’ve been to any big fun parks in America, Europe or Japan, you know there’s a lot more to going than merely rocking up at the ticket booth with wallet in hand.
Here’s what you need to know before you go, so you can make the most of your time and avoid any potential banana peel slip-ups along the way.
Confession: I’m giving you this advice because, well, I failed to take it myself. We got to the Universal Studios park at around 9am and entered quickly enough, but then learned that we should’ve pre-booked entrance to Super Nintendo World and all its experiences – and we didn’t even get in there until 6pm.
We ended up missing out on most of the rides and experiences in Super Nintendo World, and it started raining after about 30 minutes! Good one, Dad. We still had a great time just taking in the sights, and there were plenty of experiences still to be had (not everything needs to be booked in advance), but… obviously we’ve started saving up for a return trip!
Read on to avoid repeating my mistakes.

Plan ahead to beat the crowds
It’s a popular spot, so plan your visit carefully.
Super Nintendo World is one of the most popular attractions in Japan, and it can get incredibly crowded, especially during weekends, holidays, and school breaks. If you can swing it, aim for a weekday visit during the off-peak season.
That means avoiding Japanese holidays like Golden Week in May, and New Year’s. Also, arrive early – like, “get there before the gates open” early – so you can be one of the first in line.
(We went on a Sunday in Summer… very busy!)
Get your hands on the ‘timed entry’ tickets
Access to Super Nintendo World requires special timed entry tickets, so grab the app – or pay for an Express Pass!
Universal Studios Japan uses a timed entry system to manage the crowds at Super Nintendo World. These tickets are separate from your regular park admission and are crucial if you want to enter the land. You can get these tickets either through the Universal Studios Japan app on the day of your visit, or by purchasing an Express Pass that includes Super Nintendo World entry. The Express Pass is a bit pricier, but it guarantees your spot.
☝️Power-Up Bands are more than just a souvenir
These bands enhance your experience and make it more interactive.
The Power-Up Bands are wearable devices that connect to the Universal Studios Japan app and add an interactive element to your visit. With a band, you can collect digital coins, complete challenges, and interact with various elements throughout Super Nintendo World. In the photo above, the question block responds to my son’s fist taps by lighting up and making the iconic coin sound.
They’re not cheap (around ¥4900 or $50 AUD), but I reckon they make the experience more immersive, especially if you’re a die-hard Mario fan. They’re also available in various character designs, so you can pick your favourite.
You don’t win any prizes with them, though, so it’s mostly about the experience and the collectability. My kids still have theirs!
Must-try rides and attractions
There’s a lot to do, but here are the standouts.
- Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge: This is the big one. It’s a mixed-reality ride where you’ll race against Bowser and other Mario characters. You’ll need to wear AR goggles, and the ride itself is a blend of physical sets and digital elements. It’s super popular, so make it your first stop.
- Yoshi’s Adventure: This is a more family-friendly ride where you can hop on Yoshi’s back and go on a gentle tour around the Mushroom Kingdom. It’s a great option if you’re there with younger kids or just want a more relaxed ride.
- Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown: This is an interactive attraction where you battle Bowser Jr. and his minions. It’s not a traditional ride but more of an interactive game. It’s fun, especially if you’re wearing a Power-Up Band.
Don’t skip the themed food
The food is part of the experience, so dig in!
Super Nintendo World is packed with Mario-themed food options that are almost as much fun to look at as they are to eat. The most famous spot is Kinopio’s Café (Toad’s Café), where you can chow down on dishes like the Super Mushroom Pizza Bowl or Mario’s Bacon Cheeseburger (above). Even the drinks and desserts are themed – think Princess Peach Cake or Question Block Tiramisu. It’s not cheap (sensing a theme?), but definitely worth it for the experience.
Merchandise galore
Save some yen for exclusive merchandise.
If you or your kids are into collectibles, Super Nintendo World has plenty of exclusive merch. From Mario and Luigi hats to plush toys and Power-Up Bands, there’s something for every fan. Prices can be a bit steep, but it’s not every day you get to shop in the Mushroom Kingdom!
Be prepared for the weather
Japan’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly.
Japan can be quite humid in summer, and winter can be freezing, especially if you’re not used to the cold. Make sure you check the weather forecast before you go and dress in layers.
Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and maybe a poncho if there’s rain in the forecast. Most of the day was a scorcher for us, and then it clouded over and started raining not long after we got into Nintendo World. Karma!👇
Language barrier – not a huge issue, but worth noting
Don’t worry too much, but a few phrases might help.
While many of the staff at Universal Studios Japan and Super Nintendo World speak basic English, it’s always a good idea to learn a few Japanese phrases to help with directions or ordering food. Plus, it’s a nice way to show respect for the local culture.
Overall
Super Nintendo World is a blast, but it does take some planning to get the most out of it.
With a bit of prep, you’ll be dodging Koopa shells and collecting coins like a pro in no time. Enjoy your adventure!

Again, you’ll want to book ahead, which means we missed out on almost everything but Mario and the Jaws boat ride (which is epic), so go prepared. Don’t be like me!
