We all knew we’d get there eventually…
In a time when electric motors mean we no longer need complicated mechanical drive systems, the iconic long and low-slung red bike from the anime classic Akira is a more realistic production opportunity than ever before.
In a wild fusion of retro-futuristic fantasy and engineering prowess, Barcelona’s Bel&Bel studio has brought Shotaro Kaneda’s iconic motorcycle from the 1988 film Akira to life.
I’ve seen a few of these projects over the years, but I don’t think any of them come close to this bespoke bike unveiled back in January.
This meticulously crafted, fully functional replica of the iconic ‘Akira bike’ boasts neon-lit tires and a distinctive split-open body, mirroring the original’s vibrant red hue and adorned with authentic decals from brands like Canon and Citizen.
The bike’s design pays homage to its cinematic predecessor while incorporating modern technological advancements.
Bel&Bel’s rendition is not just a showpiece; it’s a high-performance machine equipped with a twin-motor, two-wheel-drive system capable of delivering up to 200 horsepower.
Of course, the inclusion of electronically controlled anti-lock brakes and a reverse function enhances its practicality and safety, which admittedly wasn’t too great a concern for the Akira film’s biker gangs…
For those seeking a personalised touch, the studio offers customisation options, allowing clients to integrate components from premium motorcycle manufacturers. This bespoke approach ensures each bike is as unique as its owner.

Adding to its allure, the motorcycle features an engine sound that artfully blends recordings from a MiG-21 fighter jet and a 1927 Harley-Davidson, amplifying its cyberpunk aesthetic. The visible crankshaft and gearbox, along with the green static electricity effect around the front tire during rides, further enhance its futuristic appeal.
How much?
Akira’s Kaneda bike by Bel & Bel starts at €24,000 ($38K AUD), which is only about five grand more than a Yahama R1. Be honest, which would you rather have?
Time to get the cheque book out…
BUT HEY
If Kaneda’s bike is a little too full-on for you, how about this Capsule scooter from Dragon Ball?
To be honest… I think this is even cooler.
