Letting your kids dress how they want is the way

It’s about them, not you

DadBase: A young boy getting dressed in odd clothes

Our kids, 8 and 6, are starting at a new school soon – and unlike their current school, this one has no uniform. One morning, my wife and I got to thinking, “what should they wear??”

Well, to be fair, she asked the question, but I was quickly invested. My kids’ style has always mattered to me!

After a surprisingly heated bit of back-and-forth – I felt they should be the coolest-looking kids at school, she felt they should look ready for a Vogue cover shoot – we realised… it doesn’t need to be up to us, and maybe they’d even be better off if we made this their first regular ‘big kid decision’.

It got us to thinking – letting the kids dress the way they want is more important than making them look like us. Here’s why:

Encourages self-expression

Kids are little humans with their own personalities, preferences, and quirks. When you let them choose their clothes, you’re giving them a chance to express who they are.

Whether it’s a dinosaur onesie, a tutu over jeans, or mismatched socks, these choices are how they tell the world, “This is me!”

Embrace it, even if it’s not quite what you’d pick.

Builds confidence

Giving your kids the freedom to choose their outfits can boost their confidence. It teaches them to make decisions and stand by them.

Plus, when they feel good about what they’re wearing, it shows. They walk taller, smile wider, and carry a sense of pride. Who knew a sparkly pair of shoes could do that?

Fosters independence

Independence is a key life skill. Allowing your kids to pick their clothes is a simple way to foster this. It’s a safe space for them to make choices and learn from them.

Sure, they might end up wearing a winter coat in summer, but that’s part of the learning curve. They’ll figure it out eventually, and they’ll be better for it.

Reduces morning stress – maybe?

Mornings are chaotic enough without the added battle over what your kids are wearing. By giving them control over their wardrobe, you can bin one source of stress.

Set some basic guidelines if you need to (like appropriate attire for school), but otherwise, let them run wild. You’ll save time and energy, and they’ll feel empowered.

That said… be ready to dive in for help finding the other half of their favourite pair of socks, or to resolve a meltdown over which tee goes with which shoes!

Celebrates diversity

Every family is different, and what’s considered “normal” attire can vary widely. By allowing your kids to dress how they want, you’re celebrating that diversity.

It’s a subtle way of teaching them that it’s okay to be different and that they should embrace their unique identity.

Tips for letting go

(without losing your mind)

  • Set boundaries: If there are certain occasions where specific attire is necessary, explain why and keep those rules clear. For everyday wear, though, try to relax your standards.
  • Compromise: If your child’s outfit choice is truly problematic (like shorts in a snowstorm), offer them a choice between two weather-appropriate options.
  • Positive reinforcement: Praise their choices and their independence. A simple “I love how you picked out your outfit today” can go a long way.
  • Be an example: Show them how you make your own clothing choices. Talk about why you like certain clothes and how they make you feel. It’s a great way to bond and share your own personality.

At the end of the day, remember that clothes are just clothes. They don’t define who your kids are, but the freedom to choose them can help shape who they become.

So, next time your little one comes out dressed like a superhero princess with rain boots, give them a high five and roll with it. 💪
