Volkswagen says February will bring a first official look at a new entry-level EV that it’ll price around $20,000 USD — which works out to about $32K dollaridoos in Australia.
For Australian buyers, where an influx of cheap Chinese EVs have made the electric future pretty accessible in comparison to many other markets, that would make the new VW unusually competitive for a European brand.
It’s worth noting that the car teased here is only a concept and not the final design, which likely won’t be revealed for at least another year.
And, while we’re at it, there’s not much reason to think this EV will be offered in the US (likely ‘too small’), or in Australia — or at least, not without a price tag closer to 40-45K dollaridoos.
They’re not saying what it’ll be called yet, but the brand’s current theme suggests ID.1 as an obvious choice — and EV expert Dom has used some editing tricks above to reveal the car’s name plate.
There’s also an upcoming model based on the stylish ID2.all concept (WhichCar), although that will be larger and more expensive than this one (1).
The so-called ID.1 isn’t slated to hit the market until 2027, though, so if you’re keen… at least you’ve got time to save up.
