Great question, I’m glad you asked. Here’s the answer, in brilliant visual form, thanks to Threads user @RivianUpdates

You’ve probably seen that I’m a little obsessed with the recently revealed Rivian R3 and R3X ‘compact’ EVs.
And, while I’m not sure they’ll ever make it to Australia, VW’s recently $7 billion AUD ($5b USD) joint venture announcement with Rivian gives me hope it’ll at least launch in Europe where I’m currently based.
I’ve been wondering exactly how much smaller the new models are, including the bigger R2 SUV that was technically the main focus of Rivian’s March reveal event (YouTube), but Threads user @RivianUpdates has come to the rescue with an image that overlays the three models.
It’s a millimetre-perfect comparison, too, because they’re all drawn from the same official drive-by video with a stationary camera position.

🔼 @RivianUpdates also took the time to silhouette each model in three distinct (BMW M…) colours, to make the difference even clearer!
Thanks to @RivianUpdates for their great work.

In terms of official figures, here’s what Wikipedia has listed for measurements:
| Model | Wheelbase | Length | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rivian R1S | 3076mm | 5100mm | 2014mm | 1816mm min |
| Rivian R2 | 2935mm | 4715mm | – | 1700mm |
| Rivian R3 | 2799mm | ~4588mm | – | – |
Note: The ~4588mm length assigned to the R3 is based on a Consumer Reports article that claims the R3 is “around 5 inches shorter” than the R2, but Rivian itself hasn’t yet offered any other official figures.
For reference, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (WhichCar reviews) has a longer wheelbase than the Rivian R2 at 3000mm, but an overall shorter length at 4635mm – hence its more hatch-like styling.
The R3 is still a fairly sizeable thing, though, with its roughly 4588mm length and 2799mm wheelbase comfortably shading models like the Volvo EX30 (WhichCar), which has a 2650mm wheelbase and an overall length of 4233mm.
