I already know that I have no idea how to use this and that I’d never master it, but… I must have it. Just look at it! I must have it.

Kevin Parker of Aussie band Tame Impala has unveiled the Orchid, a retro-futuristic musical instrument developed in collaboration with Telepathic Instruments – and I bloody well must have it. As previously stated.
Now, since I know so little about music (as much as I adore it), I will say I am reliably informed that Orchid’s standout feature is its matrix of eight chord-type selection and modification keys, complemented by a single-octave keyboard that allows users to choose root notes and trigger chords.
It boasts a 16-voice polyphonic synth engine, onboard ambience, modulation effects, a dedicated bass synth engine, dual stereo speakers, a responsive keyboard, and a rechargeable battery. Additional functionalities include loop mode, onboard reverb and delay effects, and MIDI output.
The instrument’s sleek, retro-futuristic design is the brainchild of co-founder Ignacio Germade – who, if I understand its presence on his website, must have also designed the Hasselblad X1D camera, and that’s one I’ve lusted after for a while.
What a man.
The Orchid (apparently there’s no ‘the’ but I just can’t) will be listed at $549 USD ($850 AUD) starting December 18, and I have no idea if that’s a good price.

There’s an initial limited release of 1000 units, serving as a beta test and offering early adopters the opportunity to influence and refine the design before a broader release.
Beyond his musical ventures, Parker recently collaborated with Parisian fashion brand A.P.C. on a “psychedelic minimalism” clothing line, featuring items like alpaca sweaters, corduroy trousers, and bucket hats.
Gotta do something with one’s spare time, I guess… (how about a new album, champ?)
