Animation students create beautiful Zelda tribute video

So, listen, we need to get this Breath of the Wild anime made. Let’s go, Nintendo!

A stunning fan-made anime opening for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has surfaced online, created by students from the 2023 Chungkang Animation School.

This two-and-a-half-minute “thesis film” beautifully captures the spirit of the game, with iconic characters Link, Zelda, and the Champions, set to Yoasobi’s “RGB.”

The students have emulated classic anime visual styles – and, wisely, have explicitly stated their work is a non-commercial tribute to Nintendo and Yoasobi.

While this fan project celebrates Nintendo’s beloved franchise, it highlights the delicate balance between fan creations and copyright. Nintendo recently shut down a live-action Zelda fan film that sought crowdfunding, again showing their pretty famous (overzealous?) vigilance in protecting their intellectual property.

On the bright side, Nintendo is actively developing its own live-action Zelda movie, co-funded with Sony, with Shigeru Miyamoto is heavily involved – although we might be lucky to see it before 2030
