Remembering to put it somewhere, thinking of 25 ideas for poses, and finding the strength at ~10pm to do it… it’s a lot for any parent in the already stress-laden month of Christmas.
Then I thought, what if I make a project out of it?
I’ve really gotten into photography over the past few years, as many have these days – everybody’s got a camera and there’s no shortage of great editing tools to get a semi-professional look – so I’m often on the lookout for fun little photo challenges.
Come December, it occurred to me that that blasted Elf on the Shelf is a pretty photogenic character, so I was even more inspired to do a good job of finding good spots for him to do his cheeky thing. And I really need the inspiration, too, now that my son is no longer under the spell of Santa. My little girl, though, she’s still fully entranced!

I snapped these photos with my incredible little Ricoh GR III X – a brilliant and very pocketable camera that I cannot recommend enough.
If you’re looking for a great ‘everyday carry’ camera that isn’t just your phone, you can pick up the GR III X on Amazon ( 🇦🇺 OZ link | 🇺🇸 US link ), or go support your local camera store. I’ve embedded a really good review at the bottom of this page, too.
There’s not much else to say here, really. I just wanted to share these photos, because I’m pretty rapt with how they turned out, and hopefully it’ll give you the same inspiration for December 2024 that I took from this project here in 2023.
Let me know if you have any favourites!
And, uh, feel free to give me some ideas for next year. I think I’ll start with this great little project at The Nerd’s Wife for making the elf poseable with some floral wire inserted into its limbs. Surgery time! (Or we could all just buy this poseable Elf on the Shelf… 🇦🇺 Oz link | 🇺🇸 US link)
